5 Ways to Support Pride Month

Pride Month originates in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York. This definitive moment in the Gay Liberation Movement allowed members of the LGBTQ+ community to gather together and optimize unity against oppression. Since 1970, the queer community still gathers every year to demonstrate pride in their identity and demand equal rights. Join us in celebrating this Pride Month by honoring our LGBTQ+ peers and recognizing how their many contributions bring love, diversity, and inclusion to our world.

Here are a few ways to support the LGBTQ+ community this Pride Month and all year-round:

Read books by LGBTQ+ authors

Dedicate some time to learning about LGBTQ+ history and the impact lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals have had on our society. Feel free to explore the realm of gender and queer studies or sit back and enjoy fiction written through the LGBTQ+ perspective.

Donate to LGBTQ+ organizations

If you have the means, there are hundreds of different organizations that aim to financially support LGBTQ+ youth! Here are just a few you can donate to:

  • The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ youth.
  • GLSEN: Supporting education environments, GLSEN works to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Transgender Law Center: The largest national trans-led organization supporting the trans community by providing legal expertise and advocating for safe and affirming spaces for trans youth

Shop from queer-owned businesses

If you’re going to be shopping this June, why not do a little extra research and find a queer-owned business to contribute to! A few of our fav LGBTQ+ brands are Alder New York, We Are Fluide, and House of Intuition. If you’re an avid Yelp user, you can even filter your searches to find local queer-owned businesses in your area! Allow yourself to splurge a little when you know your money’s going to a great cause.

Support LGBTQ+ art and culture

Listen to your fav queer artist or reshare content from a beloved queer influencer! Even if you can’t always afford to pull out your wallet, there are numerous ways to support the LGBTQ+ community with your voice and platform.
