Meet Our Pro Ambassador, Marquie Covington
@mirrored.by.marquie
Hi, my name is Marquie Covington! Some people call me “Marq”, “Mar-qwee”, “Marker”... the list goes on! I am 26 years old and currently residing in Fort Worth, Texas but I was originally from Los Angeles, California. I have been doing hair ever since I started cosmetology school in 2016 where I now specialize in blondes, lived in color and hair extensions. When I’m not doing hair, you can find me at concerts, being a big foodie or spending time with my now wife, Cara!
Q & A With Marquie
Get to know Marquie as she shares her journey of becoming a licensed hairstylist, her rise on social media, and her tips for success.
Q:What is your full name? Age? Reside in?
A: My name is Marquie Rae Hibler, I am 26 years old, and I live in Fort Worth Texas!
Q: When and where were you born? Where have you lived?
A: I was born in LA and I will always consider Cali my home, but I grew up in Fort Worth Texas!
Q: What is your name and nickname?
A: The list goes on for hours: marker, markymark, mar-qwee” and mar-queer are some personal favs hahaha but my extremely close friends all call me “Marq” which I love because my dads name is mark!
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I originally wanted to be an aquatic therapist, or a scuba instructor. I have such a passion for water that I wanted my career to be geared towards water, but being a hairstylist kinda fell into my lap!
Q: What is an interesting/fun fact about you?
A: I have a huge passion for Volkswagen’s, I own a 1985 VW cabriolet, she’s my baby!
Q: What is your favorite activity or hobby?
A: Thrifting! Also not a hobby, but I definitely consider myself a Foodie! LOL I had a time of my life I struggled with my relationship with food, and now I don’t! Concerts/music are also a huge part of my life.
Q: Favorite candy, treat, or guilty pleasure?
A: Peach Jolly ranchers are my fave fancy, but i’m a sucker for a good tiramisu, guilty pleasure are gas station taquitos! HAHAHA
Q: What is your favorite self care routine?
A: I LOVE a good refresh/wash day where I blow out my hair with all my fav products, I love the PALLURE her Jet Black hair mask to tint my hair back to solid black, rinsing it out with SOS shampoo & conditioner for a lingering smell of freshness and adding the pallure oil for shine.
Q: What year did you start Cosmetology School?
A: I started cosmetology school in 2016.
Q: What was your biggest obstacle and how did you overcome it?
A: I dropped out of beauty school 4 times due to depression, anxiety, 2 jobs outside of school, abusive relationships & no money. When I finally graduated, it was the best feeling of relief I’ve ever felt. I will never be able to explain how amazing it felt to finally be free, and I was hopeful to be financially free as well. As I’m typing this today, I am financially free, and I never thought I would be able to say that out loud.
Q: What advice do you have for current cosmetologist students?
A: For current students I CONSTANTLY say to make at least one close friend, and stick to them. They will make school easier. I also CANNOT repeat this enough to ask questions. IN MY OPINION, there are NO stupid questions. If you feel “silly” or “embarrassed” to ask questions, I promise you there is at least one other person too nervous to ask. You’re not only helping yourself, you’re helping others.
Q: Have you continued your education and if yes why do you think it is important?
A: YES absolutely!! Continued education is required by the state. But I also continue my education by paying for classes to learn techniques, tips, & tricks! i truly believe you can learn something new every class you go too. This past year I finally took the leap to learn extensions (it was terrifying) but I'm so happy that I did.
Q: How important of a role has social media played in your professional career?
A: I think this day and age social media is VERY important, for those that are seeking clientele, social media can absolutely help with that. Social media also offers FREE tips & tricks for guidance. social media shows who i am as a person, i want clients to come to me for me.
Q: Which platform has been most impactful to you?
A: TikTok
Q: What advice do you have for someone starting out as a stylist and trying to get their name out on Social Media?
A: DO IT! Truly and wholeheartedly do not be scared to post. I was so scared to post and now I receive PR packages, and i’ll be on stage in Chicago next year BECAUSE of social media. Find a niche, and run with it. Be yourself.
Q: What's your specialty service you offer? Blonding? Color? Color Correction?
A: I specialize in blondes, lived in color, and extensions. but I am damn proud to say I can do just about anything. I love a good challenge!
Q: What salon do you work in?
A: Salon and Spa Galleria, I have my own suite.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about being a stylist?
A: The look on my clients faces when they see themselves in the mirror. I get to see it every day 3-8 times a day. It will never get old and I cherish it every single time!
Q: What do you enjoy most about working in your salon?
A: Being my own boss, and being able to have deeper conversations with my clients that you wouldn’t be able to in a regular salon.
Q: What advice do you have for your fellow stylist, followers, and people you inspire?
A: Be true to yourself, and don’t care about what other people think of you. It can change your life!
Q: Who inspires you?
A: My Fiancé & My Family
Q: Who is someone you admire, and why?
A: I absolutely admire @yourstylistbennie! Bennie and I found each other through social media, he is also a hair stylist, and we bonded or “trauma bonded” as we might say. We have a very similar past, considering all that he has been through and he is KILLIN the game. I look up to him so incredibly much. He's an amazing artist and a damn good person!
Q: What is a cause you are passionate about?
A: The LGBTQ community
Q: What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
A: Honestly myself. I had no one at one point in my life, and I knew I had to take a leap. I always loved hair and makeup and I knew I had to do something with my life, so beauty school it was!
Q: What mark or impact do you want to make in this industry?
A: I want to show people how I survived being on the verge of not wanting to be here anymore vs where i’m at now. I went through hell and back, I'm just a person trying to make it like everyone else, and if I can do it, so can you!
Q: What legacy do you want to leave behind?
A: “I just want to let them know they didn’t break me”.
Q: Short term goal you would like to achieve?
A: I would love to move to a bigger suite, and offer shadow days/classes.
Q: Long term goal. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?
A: Hmmmm…. I would love to eventually have my own salon. But until then I see myself growing on TikTok, and being the face of the brands that I love so much.
Q: What is one thing that you like to share with your followers? One is one piece of advice you can share that will help them grow personally and professionally?
A: Personally, never stop being you. be the “weird barbie” if you have to. Never let anyone dull your shine. Everyone is so so unique, I want to see that for others. Professionally, always ask questions, never stop being a sponge. Soak up all the info you can!
